This session on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esof.eu\/the-programme\/event-information\/life-after-phd.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">engaging supervisors in career development<\/span><\/a> as well as another session on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esof.eu\/the-programme\/event-information\/life-after-phd-industry.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what does industry wants from you<\/span><\/a> had been organized by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/6613591\" target=\"_blank\">CARE group<\/a><\/span>. This group is composed of <strong>C<\/strong>areer <strong>A<\/strong>dvisers supporting <strong>R<\/strong>esearchers in <strong>E<\/strong>urope.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/BiotechBarb\/life-after-a-phd-sessions-esof2016\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Insights from these sessions posted on Twitter<\/span><\/a> had been compiled by my colleague Barbara Janssens (DKFZ, Heidelberg). Moreover, Elisabeth Pain wrote an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/careers\/2016\/07\/career-advice-highlights-euroscience-open-forum\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">article about the first session on ScienceMag.org<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These are some messages from participants of our sessions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s not easy for PIs to give feedback to PhD students or postdocs on their academic potential, if they believe it is rather low.<\/li>\n<li>Your mentor does not necessarily need to be your PI. Get an independent opinion on your career achievements and prospects.<\/li>\n<li>Look for a new PI, if you are not satisfied with your current one, especially if you are a postdoc.<\/li>\n<li>Companies are not compromising on personal and social competences, whereas they often do on other criteria like factual and expert knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s important to provide evidence for your personal and social skills by giving examples.<\/li>\n<li>70-90 percent of jobs are filled via individual networks, the rest via open job announcements.<\/li>\n<li>When applying, present yourself as the solution to the company&#8217;s problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you would like to hear more about these messages and what was discussed in this regard, do not hesitate to contact me!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m just back from the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2016 in Manchester where I participated as speaker in the career programme.
