Who chooses an academic career, must be able to
complete an increasingly complex package of tasks after the doctorate at the
latest, juggling research, teaching, acquisition of third-party funds,
participation in congresses, publishing, committee work, self-marketing &
networking, etc. There is not necessarily an awareness of the responsibility,
which the role as a leader brings with it. Often there is also a lack of role
models for the orientation in relation to the personal leadership role or to
one’s own leadership self-understanding.

For leadership success, it is important that managers in science and
technology are aware of their leadership role and the accompanying
circumstances as well as of the needs of their staff. In many working groups at
universities people from different backgrounds, countries of origin and
different cultural backgrounds work together. Successful intercultural
communication in everyday management life requires a conscious approach to
foreign cultures. A high Empathy, cultural sensitivity and the willingness to
look at things differently to recognise and include are crucial for this.

Leadership means giving people orientation and motivating them to
achieve defined goals by giving their best. Leadership succeeds not based on a
particular recipe, but a complex process, which draws on personal experience as
a manager and as a guided person. The development of leadership skills is
dependent on context, situation and people involved. Due to the different and
changing challenges, executives acquire an individual set of leadership skills
and ability to establish an own leadership profile. Leadership will only be
successful if the executive is willing to reflect on one’s own personality and
situations from everyday management life and brings this experience responsibly
and appropriately to the everyday leadership.

Date: Monday and Tuesday, 17-18 June 2019
Duration: 1.5 days; Monday, 17 June 2018, 14-18h and Tuesday, 18 June 2018, 9-17h
Location: GZMB, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, seminar room 0.232 (ground floor)
Trainer: Dr. Silke Oehrlein-Karpi

Registration: Please register here and send an email to career@gauss.uni-goettingen.de including a short statement on your motivation to attend the workshop.

Scientists often follow their vocation with enthusiasm and a high degree of intrinsic motivation.
