{"id":420,"date":"2013-08-20T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2013-08-20T07:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ggnb-blog.uni-goettingen.de\/?p=420"},"modified":"2013-07-23T14:27:24","modified_gmt":"2013-07-23T12:27:24","slug":"how-to-communicate-why-leaving-academia-its-a-question-of-what-you-want-instead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ggnb-blog.uni-goettingen.de\/?p=420","title":{"rendered":"How to communicate why leaving academia: It&#8217;s a question of what you want instead!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I had a discussion with some postdocs about how to communicate about leaving academia to possible future employers.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, I believe it is not a question of why you want to leave science; It is rather the question why you want to have a specific job outside academia: what motivates you to apply for this job and why do you think that you would be successful in this job \u2013 and that\u2019s what future employers are interested.<\/p>\n<p>So ask yourself the questions which skills and interests are distinguishing you from others. In performing which kind of activities have you proven these skills? How will they enable you to do the new job?<\/p>\n<p>In her <a title=\"Careerealism - Ease Tension in Recruitment Process\" href=\"http:\/\/www.careerealism.com\/ease-tension-recruitment-process\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">article on CAREEREALISM.COM<\/span><\/a>, Karen Siwak moreover highlights the importance of being \u201crealistic about your qualifications\u201d and not to \u201capply for jobs for which you are clearly unsuitable\u201d for reducing tension in the recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>You will feel much more self-confident, if you are clear about how your skills fit to a specific job. Possible employers want to be convinced of <strong>your motivation<\/strong> and <strong>your fit to a job<\/strong>.
