Online workshop: “A Career in Academia”, 14-15 June 2022

We are happy to announce our next online GAUSS Career Service workshop “A Career in Academia” by Dr. Neela Enke.

Am I suited for a career in academia? And what does it take to become a professor? Are there alternatives? These questions are crucial for scientists throughout their postdoc phase. This workshop gives an overview on how a career in academia can be achieved and which parameters are relevant for strategic career development in the (German) academic system.

GAUSS Career Impulse Session (8 July 2022, 14:00-15:30) with Dr. Hendrik Urbanke (Evotec): “From Neuroscience to Biology 2.0 – what it’s like to transition from bench to server”

We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Sessions, this time with Dr. Hendrik Urbanke from Evotec International GmbH.

About the speaker: Hendrik is an alumnus of the GGNB Systems Neuroscience PhD program. He performed his doctoral thesis in the German Center for neurodegenerative diseases in Prof. Andre Fischers’ group working on Epigenetic readers using transcriptomics. Before that, he did his MSc in Developmental Neural and Behavioral biology in Goettingen focusing on molecular Neuroscience.

After graduating in 2018 he continued his research as a post-doc until 2019. After a short exploration of the startup world, he made the transition to industry in the end of 2019 and joined Evotec where he started working on chronic kidney disease as a data scientist, thus made the transition from wet-lab to dry-lab. He is now leading the target identification efforts within the computational biology team of Evotec Goettingen, which is expanding. He is looking forward to sharing his experience on transitioning to a completely new field and method and answer any questions you may have around industrial research and alike.

Workshop “Job Hunting and Application Skills”, 4-5 July 2022

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service in-person workshop “Job Hunting and Application Skills” by Gaby Schilling.

Target group: Postdoctoral scientists and late-stage PhD students who are currently applying or planning to apply for a position in industry or other areas outside academia.

Goal: Becoming familiar with all steps involved in the application process.

Dates: Monday and Tuesday, 4-5 July 2022

About the speaker: Ole is an alumnus of the “Biomolecules: Structure – Function – Dynamics” program and former students’ representative of the GGNB. In his PhD Thesis in the lab of Prof. Dr. Marina Rodnina at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, he studied the binding and catalytic dynamics of Elongation Factor P during translation. He received his doctoral degree in 2018. 

Before joining GGNB, Ole studied in Hannover, Göttingen and Cambridge mainly focusing on broad spectra of natural products and their application. After defending his thesis, Ole joined the Bayer AG as trainee in the Internation Future Leadership Programm in product supply, during which he gathered on-site experience in Germany, Switzerland, US and Italy. In his current role he supports the company vision of “Health for all, hunger for none” as quality assurance manager in the area biologic development. His work consists of a mixture of project management, strategic quality improvements measures, QA-oversight of biotech facitilties, hands-on troubleshooting and lots of fire fighting.

Workshop “Career Planning”, 23-24 May 2022

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshops: “Career Planning- What are my further career movements” by Dr. Matthias Merkelbach.

What are my unique abilities and interests critical in determining the right career path for me? Can I combine my ideas about a fulfilled life with a career outside of university and academia? How can I develop a strategy for embarking on a non-academic career path?

This workshop helps to answer this – and other – questions for all those who want to plan their career development strategically.

GAUSS Career Impulse Session (20 May 2022, 14-15:30h) with Dr. Cindy Wechsler (Pfizer): “From positive read-out to worldwide supply – how the pandemic changed industry practices” – hybrid event!

We are happy to announce our our next GAUSS Career Impulse Session with Dr. Cindy Wechsler (Pfizer Manufacturing Deutschland GmbH).

Cindy is an alumna of our PhD Program “Biomolecules: Structure – Function – Dynamics”. She performed her doctoral thesis in the Bioanalytics Group of Prof Dr. Kai Tittmannn (Department of Molecular Enzymology) and successfully finished her PhD in 2014.

In this session Cindy will be sharing insights on her career steps and her experience. Of course, questions from your side are more than welcome.

Please note that the talk will be a hybrid event this time! This is the first time since the pandemic that we could invite a speaker to come back to Göttingen and we are very happy to have the opportunity to see you face-to-face again.

If you cannot make it to the event in-person, but would still like to join you have the chance to attend online as well!

Due to the limited number of people who can be there in person, it is not possible to show up spontaneously. You would need to check with us first and can only come when your participation in person is confirmed.

Workshop Description: The ability to deal with conflicts is a key component of professional conduct and an important factor for personal and professional success. The workshop enables the participants to experience conflict as agent of innovation, professional and personal development. Conflicts are often perceived as painful, disruptive and stressful. Only rarely the potential for innovation and change is realized and appreciated. This seminar examines conflicts in regard to their chances and challenges to introduce a constructive concept of conflict as social normality. The participant’s conflict solution competences are strengthened and activated to deal with difficult situations. Professional communication as tool for conflict solution is explained and practiced.
