GAUSS Career Impulse Session (10 Mar 2023, 14:00-15:30) with Dr. Sukanya Sengupta (Thermo Fisher Scientific): “From academia to industry – requirements and responsibilities of an Application Specialist”

We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Sessions, this time with Dr. Sukanya Sengupta, Application Specialist at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

  • Date: Friday, 10 March 2023
  • Time: 14:00-15:30 (appr.)
  • Location: online
  • Registration: Please write a short e-mail to career@gauss.uni-goettingen.de if you plan to attend. The log-in data will be sent to registered participants.

About the speaker: Sukanya is a geochemist by academic training. After completing her master’s in geosciences in Kolkata, India in 2011, she moved to Göttingen, Germany in 2012 for her PhD. Her doctoral and post-doctoral research entailed studying oxygen isotopes and other elements in various geological samples in order to understand early Earth processes. Sukanya stepped into industry in 2020 by joining Thermo Fisher Scientific in Bremen where she is an Application Specialist for the techniques of ICP-OES and ICP-MS.
In her new role Sukanya is active in the laboratory measuring concentrations of different elements in a variety of regularly monitored samples like food, water, soil, industrial raw materials etc. Trace elemental analysis, often covering almost all elements in the periodic table, is one of the fundamental requirements in society to ensure the products being used and manufactured can be designed to have less impurities, be more efficient, and most importantly are safe for use and/or public consumption. Sukanya is engaged in developing new methods and applications that fulfil industry as well as research requirements in this aspect. She assists customers in their daily analytical routines for performing such measurements using the latest available technology.
Sukanya will share more details about her career path and the challenges, hurdles, as well as successes and accomplishments she has experienced during her transition from academia to industry. She will try to shed some light on the career prospects in industry for young scientists and how the skills acquired in academia can be best transferred to new roles in the industrial world to pursue new career opportunities.

Workshop “Exploring the Unknown – The Company World”, 13-14 February 2023

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshop “Exploring the Unknown – The Company World” by Dr. Gaby Schilling.

This workshop is designed for postdoctoral scientists and late-stage PhD students who are currently applying or planning to apply for a position in industry. Getting to know different departments and their functions in a company and reflect about whether related jobs could be a good fit for your interests and profile are the goals of this workshop.

Dates: Monday and Tuesday, 13-14 February 2023
Duration: Monday, 13 February 2023, 9:00-17:00h and Tuesday, 14 February 2023, 9:00-15:30h
Location: GZMB building, large seminar room 0.232, ground floor, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11 (map)
Trainer: Dr. Gaby Schilling

Registration: Please register here (in case you are not yet registered) and send an email to career@gauss.uni-goettingen.de including a short statement on your motivation to attend the workshop.

Workshop Description:
PhD students and postdocs with a background in natural and social sciences are usually not educated in economic thinking. Sometimes they do not know how enterprises create values. Often they have no idea what different departments contribute to the company’s economic success. This lack of knowledge makes them feel insecure about their opportunities in fields aside from research and development. That is the reason why their applications are often not convincing. In this course, participants will learn about different roles and tasks in enterprises and how employees in different departments interact and depend on each other. Playing different roles enables participants to realize for themselves what is the most fun and what fits best to them.

Workshop description

Post-doctoral positions are usually not that hard to get but finding the right one that can firmly establish a professional career is really challenging. At the same time, scientists towards the end of their PhD don’t have a lot of time to spend on the search for the right post-doctoral position. Therefore, this workshop provides a compact overview of relevant aspects and the opportunity to explore one’s own preferences. Specifically, participants learn to define their own criteria for a successful post-doctoral position, develop their targeted search and application strategy, assess the relative benefit of post-doctoral grants and prepare to harness the full potential of their post-doc interview.

By participating in workshop, you will be learn to

  • define goals for a satisfying postdoctoral position
  • identify sources of information about potential postdoctoral hosts
  • select an appropriate application strategy
  • prepare for a postdoctoral job interview
  • develop personal criteria for the best offer
