Workshop “Grant Writing for Natural and Life Scientists”, 13-14 July 2017

We are happy to invite you to our workshop “Grant Writing for Natural and Life Scientists” with Dr. Christina Schütte. The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant applications to various funding bodies (BMBF, DFG). The corresponding funding principles will be exemplified in exercises for preparing work plans and writing abstracts for grant applications.

Workshop dates: Thursday, 13 July (9-17h) – Friday, 14 July (9-17h)
Place: MPI-bpc, Foyer building, small seminar room (Am Fassberg 11, ground floor, to the left from entrance)
Trainer: Dr. Christina Schütte
Duration: 2 full days

Registration: To register, please write an email, including a short statement on your motivation to join the workshop (Why this workshop?) to ggnb-career@gwdg.de.

Contents:

  • General points to consider when writing a grant application
  • Structuring a story
  • General points on good scientific writing
  • The different parts of a grant application and their contents
  • Strategies for successful grant applications: What information is necessary, how and where should it be presented?
  • Differences between different funding bodies and funding principles (stress on DFG-, BMBF- and EU-funding)
  • Common mistakes in grant applications and how to avoid them
  • Analysis of grant abstracts provided by the participants (optional)
  • Exercises for writing a grant abstract and for structuring a work plan

Requirements for participation:

The course is aimed at postdocs and late-stage PhD students in the natural and life sciences who are currently preparing or will recently prepare a grant application.

Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” (4 pages + scientific CV) as pre-work for the course which has to be submitted about one week before the workshop – please take this into consideration when planning to participate in this course.

These mini-grant applications will be evaluated by other participants individually before the course and in an evaluation session within the course. Each participant will also evaluate 3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation and the view of potential evaluators.

After registration, you will get more detailed information about the pre-work and the “mini-grant application”.

Please see below for the call of the organizers:

Dear everyone,

On behalf of all the organizers it is our pleasure to invite you to the upcoming Ribbon Synapses Symposium (RSS) 2017, a specialized international conference to be held in Göttingen, Germany on 11-12 September 2017.

The meeting is jointly organized by the two Collaborative Research Centers SFB 889 “Cellular Mechanisms of Sensory Processing” and SFB 894 “Ca2+ Signaling: Molecular Mechanisms and Integrative Functions” and will be hosted at the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine.

This meeting aims to not only bring together experts in the field, who will present and discuss novel data and provide a detailed overview of the current state of the art of ribbon synapse research, but additionally provide a platform for young scientists to present their work in form of either an oral presentation and/or a poster.

Ribbon Synapses Symposium 2017
Date: 11-12 September 2017
Location: Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine, Göttingen

Registration for short talks is open until 1 July 2017.

Please visit the conference website for further and up-to-date information: http://www.rss2017.uni-goettingen.de/

The current program and poster are attached.

In addition to the RSS2017, the students course “Fundamental Principles of Sensory Processing” will be held subsequently on Wednesday, 13 September 2017. Please note that a separate registration will be required: http://www.rss2017.uni-goettingen.de/Course.html.

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Christian Vogl (christian.vogl@med.uni-goettingen.de) and Prof. Dr. Carolin Wichmann (Carolin.Wichmann@medizin.uni-goettingen.de).

Information event on how to apply for MSCA Individual Fellowships on 14 June 2017

With the Individual Fellowships (IF) programme, the European Commission supports individual scientific careers by funding mobility opportunities, research and training.

Under the 2017 call, EUR 248.7 million are foreseen to fund IF projects. Deadline for the submission of proposals is 14 September 14 2017.

Click here to see the official Call for Applications.

In order to inform and prepare applicants for the open call, KoWi (European Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations) and the International Office of the University of Göttingen offer an information event on the MSCA Individual Fellowships on 14 June 2017.

At this event, speakers will introduce the most relevant aspects of the IF call 2017 and provide tips on writing a proposal. In addition, an MSCA fellow and an evaluator will present their personal experiences. The event targets researchers from Germany and abroad planning to conduct an IF project at a German host institution as well as at administrative staff involved in proposal submission and management.

March for Science in Göttingen: Call for Science Explainers and Volunteers

On Saturday, 22 April 2017, researchers are taking to the streets to speak up for free, open and independent science. The March for Science will take place in Göttingen along with over 400 other cities worldwide, 14 in Germany.

The Göttingen participants gather at 11:00h at the Gänseliesel and walk down Weender Straße to the Auditorium to listen to speeches of invited guests.

In order to celebrate science, you are invited to take part to discuss what science can offer and to educate the public about science. One hour before the march, at 10:00h, volunteer scientists will meet at the Gänseliesel to informally discuss scientific topics with the general public.

The organizers are still looking for volunteers and scientists who like to talk about their work and science in general. Communication would be preferably in German but non-German speakers will have lots of opportunities as well.

What could your participation look like? You can be as colorful and creative as you like, but here are a few suggestions for the march and/or for the pre-event:

  • Make a sign or shirt saying: “Ich bin xyz-Wissenschaftler, frag mich alles“ (I’m a xyz-scientist, ask me anything)
  • Talk to people walking by if they are interested in science or a specific topic of your choice
  • Dress-up as your favorite scientist
  • Dress-up as your favorite scientific theory/effect
  • Bring the PhD-cart of your lab and decorate it
  • Bring (old) science posters to show what communication among scientists look like
  • Participate in the sign-making event (will happen a few days before the march)
  • Bring little experiments to show science

Please write an email to sciencemarchgoe@gmail.com if you are curious and would like to participate. Your support and contribution would be very much appreciated.
