Talk: “Patenting and Commercializing Scientific Inventions”

You are invited to attend the talk „Patenting and Commercializing Scientific Inventions” by Dr. Stefan Uhle (MBM ScienceBridge) on

31 October 2016, 16:00-17:30h,
at the GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, seminar room 0.232.

Dr. Uhle is a patent manager for MBM Science Bridge, the technology transfer organization of Göttingen University, but his talk will also be relevant for employees of the MPIs or the DPZ since most of the legal rules are the same or at least very similar.

His talk provides information about the commercial utilization of research results and inventions. Some of the issues to be discussed are:

  • How can research results be commercialized successfully?
  • In the context of my research project, I have made an invention – which are the next steps?
  • Which help is available from the University and from MBM ScienceBridge GmbH? Where can I find competent contact persons?
  • What does the German Act on Employee Inventions (Arbeitnehmererfindergesetz) provide for University employees? What is the status of Master and Ph.D. Students?
  • Publication vs. Patent? How to manage both?
  • Strategy with intellectual property (IP) rights.
  • Examples of successful projects.

After the talk, Dr. Uhle will take the time to answer your individual questions.

Start of the 4th round of the Mentoring Program “WeWiMento”

In the past years science management has become an attractive and diverse job opportunity for young graduated academics. However, it is not always obvious which different organizational units this working field includes and which tasks science managers have to fulfill. The mentoring program WeWiMento aims at supporting graduates and late stage PhDs to get an insight into the broad field of science management and to prepare them for a job in this field.

Program structure

The one-year program consists of three units:

  • One-to-one mentoring

During the entire program each of the mentees will be accompanied by a mentor with experience in science management. The mentor will advise the mentees regarding career entries and perspectives.

  • Qualification and networking

In the first six months of the program the mentees will take part in three two-day workshops with the topics “career entry”, “capability analysis”, and “working at interfaces and in networks”. In different events (peer-group meeting, mentee-mentor lunches) the participants will have the possibility to inform themselves about career perspectives and build up a contact network.

  • Job Shadowing

In the second six months of the program mentees will pass four weeks of job shadowing in different departments or central institutions of the university, which will allow them to get an impression of the different working fields in science management.

The program starts in February 2017. The deadline for registration is 15 November 2016!

The workshop will also allow to reflect on further support options you have depending on your situation and career goal. The workshop can also be used to prepare for one-on-one employee review (planned to be obligatory for university’ employees starting in 2017).

Practicing the conversation with the PI is not intended during the workshop. In case of interest of about 6-8 participants, the organization of a communication training might be possible.
