SFB-Workshop „The Art of Leading in Non-Leadership Contexts“, 8-9 June 2015

Being a researcher in the natural sciences requires more than scientific skills: You do not only face challenges in your research, but most likely also in dealing with other people: Supervisors, colleagues, master students, technical staff and alike. The art of dealing with people can be learned. It is about knowing how to communicate effectively, to understand the nature and dynamics of conflicts and gender-related inequities, and to adopt an inner attitude of leadership even without formal leadership position.

Some of the issues that will be covered in the workshop are:

  • How to lead effectively in situations without formal leadership position
  • Understanding dynamics in communication
  • Awareness building and counter-measures in gender-biased situations
  • Learning to communicate effectively and being assertive in a scientific context
  • Developing a personal agenda for leadership and conflict solution.

Date: Monday, 8th June, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., and Tuesday, 9th June, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Location: Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, Room 0.232

Trainer: Dr. Gudrun Henne

Target group: Open for all members (PhD/Postdoc) of DFG-funded collaborative research projects (SFBs). The charges will be covered through gender equality funds.

To register, please contact Wiebke Beushausen (wiebke.beushausen@zvw.uni-goettingen.de – GenderConsulting Verbundforschung / Tel: 0551-39-33799 / Gleichstellungsbüro, Goßlerstraße 9)

We are happy to invite to the next workshop on “Grant Writing“ with Dr. Christina Schütte.

Workshop dates: Wednesday, 17 June 2015, and Thursday, 18 June 2015, 10:00-18:00 o’clock, respectively
Place: GZMB building, seminar room 0.233
Trainer: Dr. Christina Schütte
Duration: 2 days

Registration: via email to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de)

The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant applications to various funding bodies (BMBF, DFG). The corresponding funding principles will be exemplified in exercises for preparing work plans and writing abstracts for grant applications.

Contents:

  • General points to consider when writing a grant application
  • Structuring a story
  • General points on good scientific writing
  • The different parts of a grant application and their contents
  • Strategies for successful grant applications: What information is necessary, how and where should it be presented?
  • Differences between different funding bodies and funding principles (stress on DFG-, BMBF- and EU-funding)
  • Common mistakes in grant applications and how to avoid them
  • Analysis of grant abstracts provided by the participants (optional)
  • Exercises for writing a grant abstract and for structuring a work plan

Requirements for participation:

The course is aimed at postdocs and late-stage PhD students in the natural and life sciences who are currently preparing or will recently prepare a grant application.

Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” (4 pages + scientific CV) as pre-work for the course until about one week before the workshop – please take this into consideration when planning participation in this course.

These mini-grant applications will be evaluated by other participants individually before the course and in an evaluation session within the course. Each participant will also evaluate 3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation and the view of potential evaluators.

About 4 weeks before the workshop, you will get more detailed information about the “mini-grant application”.
