We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Session, this time with Dr. Marcin Barszczewski, Product Manager Automated Imaging at Leica Microsystems GmbH in Wetzlar.

  • Date: Friday, 12 June 2026
  • Time: 11:30-13:00 (appr.)
  • Location: in-person on North campus
  • Registration: Please write a short e-mail to career@gauss.uni-goettingen.de if you would like to attend.

About the speaker:

Marcin completed his PhD in neurosciences in 2005 being in the first batch of IMPRS students, then moved to Belfast in Northern Ireland to work as applications specialist and product manager for 2D imaging cameras for astronomy, microscopy and x-ray. After 15 years in Northern Ireland and in the wake of Brexit referendum’s fallout, he moved back to Germany just a few weeks before the European phase of the Covid pandemic in 2020 to work at Leica Microsystems as product manager for cameras and various types of light microscopes.

In his talk, he will share reflections and some insights into the academia-to-industry transition, what he wished he knew during and at the end of his PhD, what a Product Manager role entails, and how even the best laid plans can be undone by geopolitical madness and political short-sightedness.

About the sessions:

Our Career Impulse Sessions offer a platform for interactive and informal exchange about career-related topics for PhD students and postdocs in the Life and Natural Sciences. By inviting PhD holders with different career paths, we would like to illustrate the broad range of potential careers for PhD students and postdocs and give inspiration for career choices.
