We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Session, this time with Dr. David Hickey, Product Manager Automated Imaging at Leica Microsystems GmbH in Wetzlar.

  • Date: Friday, 28 August 2026
  • Time: 11:30-13:00 (appr.)
  • Location: in-person on North campus
  • Registration: Please write a short e-mail to career@gauss.uni-goettingen.de if you would like to attend.

About the speaker:

David studied Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London from 2015 to 2019 before completing a PhD in computational biophysics at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organisation in 2022.

After graduating, he transitioned from academia into software consulting, first in Munich and then in Berlin. In this role, he has worked on modernising and maintaining legacy healthcare software, as well as developing scripting tools and user interfaces for a low-code/no-code data analytics platform.

David will talk about how a typical day looks in the life of a software consultant, how to break into the field, what skills and interests make someone well-suited to the field, and whether software consulting might be a good fit for you.

About the sessions:

Our Career Impulse Sessions offer a platform for interactive and informal exchange about career-related topics for PhD students and postdocs in the Life and Natural Sciences. By inviting PhD holders with different career paths, we would like to illustrate the broad range of potential careers for PhD students and postdocs and give inspiration for career choices.
