WoCaNet 2017: Call For Organizers

Here comes the invitation to join the next organizers’ team of our WoCaNet symposium. Do not miss this great chance to develop relevant professional skills and network on Göttingen Campus and beyond!

We would like to invite you to join us: In April 2016, a new team of PhD students and Postdocs will assemble to start organizing the next Womens’ Careers and Networks symposium (WoCaNet), which will take place in fall 2017.

If you like the concept of the symposium, but aren’t sure yet how you could help, here are a few suggestions:

..    love money? … you could be in charge of the financial aspects of this big event!
..    like to talk and communicate? … you could be responsible for PR!
..    love the internet? … you could help to keep the website up to date!
..    like food? … you could find the best caterer for delicious food at the symposium and the networking dinner!
..    love to be creative? … you could design posters, flyers, booklets, info screens!
..    like to be close to the important people? … you could invite inspiring speakers and help organize their stay in Göttingen!

.. love to rule them all? …why not become the head organizer and keep everything up and running?

We will soon organize an introductory meeting for all potential organizers. You are welcome to come and explore – no firm commitment is expected at this stage! During this meeting, the basic tasks behind organizing the symposium will be explained. This allows people who are potentially interested in joining the organizing team to get an impression about the organization efforts and to ask questions.

For those of you who decide to get involved, a workshop will take place later where the old team will train the new team, the team members will get to know each other and divide in subgroups to tackle the tasks.

Workshop “Getting off to a Flying Start – Prepare Your Next Career Move”, 18-19 April 2016

We are happy to announce the first workshop “Getting off to a Flying Start – Prepare Your Next Career Move” with Barbara Hoffbauer.

Target group: Junior researchers with at least 1 year of postdoctoral experience who are uncertain about their next career steps and consider opportunities in science as well as alternatives outside

Goal: Reflecting and deciding about your next career steps to take

Date: Monday, 18 April 2016, 13-17 o’clock & Tuesday, 19 April 2016, 9-17 o’clock

Detailed description:

Scientists spend a lot of hard and intense work on scientific questions and projects. They always aim to achieve solid results that can be published in highly ranked journals, since scientific papers are the basis for successful job and grant applications. Sometimes, however, this focus leads to the development of career goals which are being reformulated from one publication to the next whilst the development of a career plan for the mid- or long-term comprising important milestones and alternatives often fall by the wayside. Furthermore, discussions with superiors, mentors and decision makers on one’s own future are perceived as difficult and are therefore avoided.
This workshop will support the participants in identifying their professional and personal goals on the basis of their record of accomplishments to date. Participants will recognize the necessary steps to take and actions to implement. Finally, they will develop their personal career pathway by taking their family environment into consideration.

MDC Careerday in Berlin, 14 April 2016

On April 14, 2016, the next career day at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine will take place. Among others, there will be a keynote on “Careers in biomedical industry – a few tips for the interested” by Matyas Gorjanacz (EMBL Alumnus & Laboratory Leader, Bayer Pharma AG, Berlin), a world cafe on funding opportunities, a career fair with academic institutions as well as companies as well as a panel discussion on trends and challenges of career development. Here you find the full program. Participation is free of charge, but registration is necessary.

One-Day Event “Careersteps for Postdocs in Academia and Industry”, 25 April 2016

On April 25, 2016, a one-day event for postdoctoral researchers at Göttingen Campus and German Max Planck Institutes will take place at Max Planck Campus Göttingen. This event focuses on supporting young scientists in planning their next career steps inside and outside of academia. I jointly organize this event together with Dr. Christiane Haupt (Administrative Headquaters of the Max Planck Society), and Dr. Ulrike Gerischer (Max Planck Institute for biophysical Chemistry).

Participants can select from different workshops and learn about career services at Göttingen Campus and within the MPS. Furthermore, by attending an interview with Max Planck Vice President Bill S. Hansson, young researchers can gain insight into career issues. The event will be opened by Ulf Diederichsen, Vice President of the University of Göttingen, and Reinhard Jahn, Chair of the commission for promotion of young scientists within the MPS and Director at the MPI-BPC.

These workshops are a special offer organized in cooperation with Dr. Vera Bissinger, Central Coordination Mentoring on Göttingen Campus, Dr. Bettina Ross, GGG, and Dr. Sabine Heerwart, GSGG. As it deals with science management in Germany, and for science management in Germany good to very good German skills are required, the workshop will be in German.

Einige Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen sehen das Wissenschaftsmanagement als eine Chance, der Wissenschaft treu zu bleiben und gleichzeitig mehr Planungssicherheit zu bekommen. Andere Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen haben den Bereich Wissenschaftsmanagement noch gar nicht ins Blickfeld möglicher Karrierewege genommen. Beide Gruppen wissen jedoch in der Regel wenig über dieses Berufsfeld, dessen Anforderungen und langfristigen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten. Für alle, die gern mehr darüber erfahren möchten und sich fragen, ob der Wechsel für sie interessant sein könnte, haben der GGNB Career Service und die zentrale Koordination Mentoring diesen 4-stündigen Workshop entwickelt.
–> Für jene, die den Einstieg in dieses Berufsfeld im Anschluss an den Workshop in Angriff nehmen wollen, bietet die zentrale Koordination Mentoring ein spezielles Mentoring Programm an (WeWiMento – Wege ins Wissenschaftsmanagement). Die nächste Bewerbungsrunde für WeWiMento startet im Oktober 2016.

Der Workshop soll

in die Rahmenbedingungen des Wissenschaftsmanagement in Deutschland und die Funktionen und Fähigkeiten eines Wissenschaftsmanagers/ einer Wissenschaftsmanagerin einführen,
einen Raum anbieten, in dem die Teilnehmer*innen über sich selbst und ihre Passung zum Berufsfeld “Wissenschaftsmanagement” reflektieren können und
erste Strategien aufzeigen, sich dem Berufsfeld “Wissenschaftsmanagement” zu nähern.

Nach dem Workshop wissen die Teilnehmer*innen

in welchen Organisationen und Positionen Wissenschaftsmanager*innen in Deutschland tätig sind,
welche allgemeinen Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse von Wissenschaftsmanager*innen erwartet werden,
welche Fähigkeiten und Kompetenzen sie selbst auszeichnen und
ob eine tiefergehende Beschäftigung mit dem Berufsfeld Wissenschaftsmanagement für sie interessant ist.

Workshop “Präsentation in Bewerbungsgesprächen”, 11. März 2016

We are happy to announce the first half-day workshop on interview skills. In contrast to most of our workshops, this workshop will take place in German, at least this time, to prepare those of you who are applying to the German labor market for which German skills are often requested, mostly already in the application process.

Zielgruppe: Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen in der Bewerbungsphase

Ziel: Üben der Selbstpräsentation im Bewerbungsprozess durch Trainer- und Teilnehmerfeedback

Du wartest auf die ersten Einladungen zu Vorstellungsgesprächen und möchtest Dich darauf vorbereiten oder Deine Selbstpräsentation in Vorstellungsgesprächen verbessern? Dann besuche unseren Workshop “Präsentation im Vorstellungsgespräch”! Dich erwarten ein kurzes theoretisches Input und vor allem viel Raum für Training und Reflektion von Interviewsituationen. Dabei wird ist es nicht notwendig, dass jeder Teilnehmer/ jede Teilnehmerin selbst in die Rolle des Interviewten schlüpft. Eine aktive Teilnahme aller Teilnehmer*innen wird jedoch vorausgesetzt.

BEACHTE: Teil des Workshops ist intensives Teilnehmerfeedback. Folglich sollten Teilnehmer*innen bereit sein, offen über sich selbst zu sprechen, ihre Bewerbungsunterlagen zu teilen und mit den anderen Teilnehmer*innen gemeinsam zu trainieren.

SPRACHE: Auch wenn Du kein deutscher Muttersprachler bist und Dich auf Positionen in Deutschland bewirbst, möchten wir Dich ermuntern, an der deutschen Variante des Workshops teilzunehmen. Wenn nötig, ist ein Wechsel in die englische Sprache möglich. Allerdings solltest Du bereit sein, das Interviewtraining selbst auf Deutsch auszuprobieren. Fordere Dich selbst heraus!

Vorarbeiten: Nach der Bestätigung Deiner Anmeldung werden wir Dich bitten, eine konkrete Stellenausschreibung sowie Deinen Lebenslauf einzuschicken.
