Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” (4 pages + scientific CV) as pre-work for the course until about one week before the workshop – please take this into consideration when planning participation in this course.

These mini-grant applications will be evaluated by other participants individually before the course and in an evaluation session within the course. Each participant will also evaluate 3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation and the view of potential evaluators.

About 4 weeks before the workshop, you will get more detailed information about the “mini-grant application”.

How to Find Potential Employers When Striving for a Career in Industry

The obvious way is to look for announced positions on online job boards. So you can get an idea about which company offers which kind of jobs at the moment.

However, there might be other companies, too. For example, there are medium and small-size companies which has not the money to advertise on big job boards or prefer other channels for advertising such as regional newspapers. Or some companies might be interesting, but are not offering jobs at the moment. To find out about potential employers not easily to find, it is worth to look for portals on which companies are introduced for different reasons.

For example, some portals provide regional information about existing companies to give insight in the industry of specific region or in specific sectors. For example, you can find information about the TOP 100 companies in Lower Saxony on the web.

Moreover, there are existing a lot of regional networks. For example, in the field of biotechnology, there exists the association BIO Deutschland, a roof of regional networks of companies and institutions working in the biotechnology or life sciences sector, too. Those regional networks offer different services, including for example networking events. The list of members of this association includes a couple of companies and institutions which might be potential employers for you, too. You may find those networks for other branches, too.

Another example is the German Life Science Association (Deutsch: Biologie, Biowissenschaften und Biomedizin (VBIO e.V.)) which is a roof for different societies in the life sciences as well as individual members. Becoming individual member includes, among others, getting their member magazine as well as access to counseling regarding further education and career. The association is also offering workshops and “schools” for junior researchers.

Finally, career and trade fairs are worth a visit for getting ideas about potential employers. Some career and trade fair in 2015 you can find in another post on this blog.

Faced with a challenging work life, many people simply cope. But “making the best of it” seldom allows us to really do our best. Effective self-management is essential for postdoctoral researchers who have to perform outstandingly at their job and simultaneously want to find a healthy balance between work and personal life. It is also the foundation of setting and achieving valuable, fulfilling goals. This workshop is for postdoctoral researchers who understand that their own self-management serves their own success, stability and well-being at the same time.

In this workshop, you will

  • explore your current self-management activities and pay particular attention to what the appreciable consequences are.
  • identify your personal values that influence your behavior.
  • compile the requirements from outside, work load and stress factors.
  • figure out your time killers.
  • find out what you strive for, what motivates you and how and when you get your “flow”.
  • learn how to set priorities.
  • formulate a personal SMART goal.
  • get in touch with different views of life and acquire a broader understanding of others? self-leadership approaches.

You will achieve this by

  • transferring theory into practice by reflection on your own behavior.
  • getting a short-cut overview of the most hands-on tools of time management and consider what can help you concretely.
  • doing diverse self-awareness exercises.
  • peer-coaching with constructive feedback supported by the trainer.
