Job interviews give both you and the employer the opportunity to discuss whether your skill profile and your personality match the requirements of a certain position. Since your application papers showed that you possess the desired skills for the job, the interview will also focus on your personality, working style and communication skills. The interview is meant to inform the employer about whether or not you can meet the criteria for the position and fit into the team and company culture.
Therefore, a job interview is not only about WHAT you say but also about HOW you say it – i.e. how you behave and communicate during the interview: Are you able to listen and answer appropriately to the interviewer’s questions? Can you radiate self-confidence and openness? How do you deal with unexpected questions? This hands-on workshop will support you in facing the next job interview with more confidence and in a well-prepared manner.
Since the number of participants is limited to 6 per course intensive individual work will be possible.

Topics:

  • Preparing for job interviews
  • How to make a good first impression
  • Improvement of your conversational skills
  • How to use personal strengths for delivering an authentic and confident presentation
  • Challenging moments in job interviews and how to deal with them
  • The “no-go-behavior” in interviews
  • How to cope with nervousness

Methods:

  • Brief theoretical input
  • Exercises for the improvement of personal appearance and communication
  • Breathing, vocal and body language exercises
  • Role plays of job interviews
  • Detailed individual feedback
  • Video recording of the role plays, if wanted

Workshop “Understanding Conflicts, Resolving Conflicts”, 10-11 February 2015

We are happy to announce the workshop “Understanding conflicts, resolving conflicts” with Sabine Mariß.

Duration: 2 days
Place: Seminar room, Von-Siebold-Str. 4

A life without conflict and tension does not exist. Especially in the professional context, we regularly are confronted with situations where a pleasant and productive cooperation seems impossible.
In this seminar, we will therefore take a closer look at the following aspects: What are our “red conflict buttons” and what are the reasons for our strong reactions? How can we express our opinion and interests in a manner that the other person does not need to withdraw offended or annoyed? And how to stay calm when being confronted with accusations and criticism and handle the situation constructively so that a conflict may finally lead to an improved connection and better mutual understanding.
In addition to the necessary theoretical inputs the focus of this hands-on workshop will be on practical experiences and exercises.

Topics:

  • How do conflicts arise?
  • Uncover the hidden “treasures” in conflicts
  • Explore individual strengths and weaknesses in dealing with conflicts
  • Deepen my listening to and understanding of myself and others
  • Strengthen my ability to go for my interests in a powerful yet connecting way
  • How to prepare a difficult conversation
  • How to prevent the rise of conflicts

Methods:

  • Theoretical input
  • Communication Exercises
  • Group discussions
  • Role play
  • Individual feedback

Workshop “Exploring the Unknown – The Company World”, 25 February and 23 March 2015

We are happy to announce the first workshop “Exploring the Unknown – The Company World” with Barbara Hoffbauer.

Dates: 25 February 2015, 8:30-17:00 o’clock, and 23 March 2015, 13:00-17:00 o’clock

Place: GZMB, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, seminar room 0.233

Duration: 1 + 0.5 days

Content:

PhD students and postdocs with a background in natural science, humanities, and social science are usually not educated in economic thinking. Sometimes they do not know how enterprises create values. Often they have no ideas about what different departments contribute to the company`s economic success. This lack of knowledge makes them feeling insecure about their opportunities in fields beside research and development. That is the reason why their applications are often not convincing. In this course, participants will learn about different roles and tasks in enterprises and how employees in different departments interact and depend on each other. Playing different roles enables participants to realize for themselves what makes fun most and what fits best to them.

More information about the trainer Barbara Hoffbauer is available here.

If you would like to take part in the workshop, write an e-mail to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (career-development@uni-goettingen.de). If you are postdoctoral researcher in the life and natural sciences, please additionally register here.
