Workshop “Networking in Science”, 17-18 June 2019

Networking is the most effective career building method! It works by developing relationships and talking with people who can support you to explore career options and goals.  Studies show that 70% to 90% of satisfying positions inside and outside of academia are found through proper self-promotion and networking.

In order to be able to operate successfully, good contacts are often helpful both to the people you are helping, as well as to relevant PIs, collaborators and colleagues. This network of grown relationships offers professional support, advice and information in your daily work.

The right internal and external network contacts and collaborations can facilitate work processes, additionally, by encouraging and motivating you. In short: a functioning and vital network can increase joy and satisfaction at your job.

Career Impulse Session (26 April 2019) with Manuel Landesfeind (Evotec): “What to expect from a job in a pharmaceutical research organization and how to get one”

We are happy to invite you to our next Career Impulse Session titled “What to expect from a job in a pharmaceutical research organization and how to get one” with Dr. Manuel Landesfeind from Evotec.

Manuel Landesfeind studied Computer Science in Göttingen having Biology as “area of application” and did a PhD in Bioinformatics at the Department of Bioinformatics (Prof. Morgenstern). Directly after his PhD, he joined Oncotest (Freiburg, Germany) which was acquired by Charles River Laboratories – one of the largest pharmaceutical research organizations. After nearly 3 years with Charles River, he took the next step in his career path and joined Evotec AG (Göttingen, Germany). In his talk, he will present the working environment of contract research organizations like Charles River and Evotec as well as job opportunities in these areas.

Information about the speaker: At Oncotest/Charles River, Manuel was responsible for multi-omics data-analysis on patient derived tumor samples. He led the development of the Tumor Model Compendium website of Charles River, which serves as a product catalog for hundreds of clients. In his new position at Evotec, he is responsible for supporting his colleagues with the analysis of experimental data as well as the continuous development of Evotec’s proprietary pan-omics data-analysis platform.

About the sessions: Our Career Impulse Sessions offer a platform for interactive and informal exchange about career-related topics for PhD students and Postdocs in the Life and Natural Sciences. By inviting PhD holders with different career paths, we would like to illustrate the broad range of potential careers for PhD students and postdocs and give inspiration for career choices. The sessions also offer a platform to exchange experiences among each other.

Career Impulse Session (15 Feb 2019) with Magdalena Wienken (Accenture): “Guiding Pharma R&D Through its Biggest Disruption at the Interface of Business and Technology”

We are happy to invite you to our next Career Impulse Session titled “Guiding Pharma R&D Through its Biggest Disruption at the Interface of Business and Technology” with Dr. Magdalena Wienken from Accenture.

Magdalena Wienken studied molecular medicine at the University Medical Center Göttingen and did her PhD in the Institute of Molecular Oncology (supervised by Prof. Matthias Dobbelstein). She got hooked by a similar career impulse session on consulting and aimed for a consulting career for two reasons: 1) Obtain a broader understanding of the lifescience industry, its current business challenges and future trends, 2) Receive a steep learning curve, working for senior executives in different Pharma companies within in short project cycles and at the intersection of business and technology.

Career Impulse Session (24 Jan 2019) with Kathrin Aßhauer (KWS): “Strike a new path – from sequencing data to market data”

We are happy to announce one of our new GAUSS Career Service workshops in 2019: “A Career in Academia” by Dr. Neela Enke.

Am I suited for a career in academia? And what does it take to become a professor? Are there alternatives? These questions are crucial for scientists throughout their postdoc phase. This workshop gives an overview on how a career in academia can be achieved and which parameters are relevant for strategic career development in the (German) academic system.
