Workshop “Social Networking Online”, 5 October 2015

We are happy to announce the half-day workshop “Social Networking Online – How to make use of it for career purposes and what to consider” conducted by Dr. Katrin Wodzicki.

Date: Monday, 5 October 2015, 13:00-17:00 o’clock

Place: GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, seminar room 0.232

Duration: 0.5 day

Content:

The half-day workshop aims at introducing you to the purpose of networking in general. Afterwards, we will have a closer look at LinkedIn as the most widely-used professional online network on which the GGNB recently started the GGNB network to facilitate networking among current and former members of the school. You will get an introduction into LinkedIn’s main functions, especially the professional profile which each LinkedIn member uses to present his-/herself and its relation to CVs. Moreover, you will make yourself familiar with all setting options, thereby actively controlling your privacy and visibility within and beyond LinkedIn. Finally, you will be introduced to further social media which are potentially useful for academic and other professional issues.

After the workshop you will

  • know why networking is important, where you can do it, and with whom and how,
  • be more clear about your motivation to be(come) or not to be(come) a member of LinkedIn (and other networks), your options of professional self-presentation, your networking goals, and how you can make use of LinkedIn for career-related issues, and
  • know other social media and how you might use them for academic or other professional issues.

The workshop aims at postdocs and PhD students with and without prior knowledge on the topic. Besides introducing the participants to basic knowledge on networking and social media tools, there will be room for reflection of current networking practices and social media usage as well as planning of networking and social media activities.

IMPORTANT: Participants will be asked to send their most recent CV and a short note about their career goal before the workshop. If available, bring your own laptop to the workshop. It will facilitate introductory training and small group tasks/discussions.

Registration:

If you are interested to take part in the workshop, write an email to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de).

Research and Lab Management Courses outside of Göttingen

We are constantly expanding our offers and try to react on your needs. However, not every topic is addressed. For those of you who are interested in science-related topics on which we do not offer something (at the moment or so far), here some hints to trainings offered by external providers:

EMBO Laboratory Management Course

Despite they are expensive (€ 1,850.00), they are very requested. Consequently, at the moment, free slots only are available for a training specifically addressing female leaders in science.

ReMaT | Research Management Training

The next one is mid of September in Hamburg. The participation fee is 450 €.

Workshops of the Deutscher Hochschulverband (DHV)

Those workshops are so far only offered in German. However, they are offering quite a broad range of topics including preparation for application to professorships in Germany. Participation fees vary between 200 and 400 € per workshop day – they differ between members of the DHV and non-members.

Place: Seminar room, Von-Siebold-Str. 4

A life without conflict and tension does not exist. Especially in the professional context, we regularly are confronted with situations where a pleasant and productive cooperation seems impossible.
In this seminar, we will therefore take a closer look at the following aspects: What are our “red conflict buttons” and what are the reasons for our strong reactions? How can we express our opinion and interests in a manner that the other person does not need to withdraw offended or annoyed? And how to stay calm when being confronted with accusations and criticism and handle the situation constructively so that a conflict may finally lead to an improved connection and better mutual understanding.
In addition to the necessary theoretical inputs the focus of this hands-on workshop will be on practical experiences and exercises.

Topics:

  • How do conflicts arise?
  • Uncover the hidden “treasures” in conflicts
  • Explore individual strengths and weaknesses in dealing with conflicts
  • Deepen my listening to and understanding of myself and others
  • Strengthen my ability to go for my interests in a powerful yet connecting way
  • How to prepare a difficult conversation
  • How to prevent the rise of conflicts

Methods:

  • Theoretical input
  • Communication Exercises
  • Group discussions
  • Role play
  • Individual feedback

GGNB Career Service Unit Goes Into Recess For The Summer 2015

Dear all,

From 17th July to 9th August, I’m out of office for my summer holidays. I will likely not read my e-mails during this time. I wish you all a relaxing summer break, at least with some days off, to clear your mind and recharge your batteries, maybe with view on the open ocean as I will have.

All the best,

Katrin

Workshop “Career Empowerment by Self-Reflection and Improving Assertiveness”, 21-22 September 2015

We are happy to announce the workshop “Career Empowerment by Self-Reflection and Improving Assertiveness” with Dr. Silke Oehrlein-Karpi.

Workshop date: Monday, 21 September 2015, and Tuesday, 22 September 2015, 9:00-17:30 o’clock, respectively

Place: Seminar room, Von-Siebold-Str. 4
Trainer: Dr. Silke Oehrlein-Karpi
Duration: 2 days

Registration: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/192407.html

Content:

Self-confidence and assertiveness have a big impact on how successful and authentic we are at our job as well as on how we enjoy life in general. During this workshop, participants will reflect on their skills and capabilities and how they might be more effective and assertive.

In this workshop, you will

  • learn how to become more confident and comfortable in their own skin.
  • overcome personal challenges without changing who you really are (authenticity).
  • get an idea about how to boost your visibility, credibility and influence.
  • develop further your own personal growth and success path and help others to do the same.

Approach:

The first day focuses on developing awareness of one’s own resources. By a one-to-one coaching approach participants will develop an awareness of each other’s potential. Their individual skills are objectively determined, rendering them more convincing. Their partner’s personal strategies will be compared with their own. Through this shift in perspective and the widening of awareness, the individual scope of action may be reconsidered and broadened, thus creating space for change.

On the second day, participants will elaborate on the individual values and communication attitudes, with particular consideration given to the future career path of junior scientists today. Then, participants will pinpoint and formulate a self-chosen current professional aim. Their task will then be to outline how they plan to achieve this aim effectively by using those skills and capabilities worked out in their profiles.

Pre-Work is needed for this workshop, namely reflecting on your life path so far, guided by introduction and questions sent about two weeks before the workshop.

Finally, participants develop an individual strategy for their next career steps.
