Content:
Do you wonder how your principal investigator (PI) could support your career development? In the workshop, you get input in why it might be important to involve your PI and in which form. We will elaborate topics relevant and useful to be discussed with your PI, also in the light of different career decision regarding an academic or non-academic career. We will moreover discuss potential risks of raising critical topics and how to deal with individual challenges. Goals of the workshop are to become clear about which topics you would like to involve your PI in, what to consider in this regard, and to come up with a concrete goal of how to involve your PI in your career development. The workshop will also allow to reflect on further support options you have depending on your situation and career goal. The workshop can also be used to prepare for one-on-one employee review (planned to be obligatory for university’ employees starting in 2017).

Practicing the conversation with the PI is not intended during the workshop. In case of interest of about 6-8 participants, the organization of a communication training might be possible.

Registration: Please register here (if you haven’t done it already) and write an email to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de), including a short statement on your motivation to join the workshop (Why this workshop? Which topics would you like to address with your supervisor or other senior researchers?).

Target group: Young researchers planning to apply for positions requiring project management experience

Goals: Reflect on your own project management expertise and learn how to present your expertise to potential employers

Half-Day Workshop “Practice for Job Interviews”, 8 November 2016

You are waiting for your first invitations to job interviews and want to prepare yourself as good as possible? You want to improve your interview skills? Then take part in our workshop “Practice for Job Interviews” (in German or English, to be determined).

Target group: Junior researchers (PhD students and Postdocs) who are currently applying or plan to apply soon to positions in Industry or other areas outside academic research

Goal: Practice self-presentation in the application process through trainer and peer feedback

Date: Tuesday, 8 November 2016, 13:00-17:00h
Duration: 0.5 day
Place: GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, seminar room 0.232
Trainer: Dr. Katrin Wodzicki

Deadline for registration: 27 October 2016

The workshop will offer short theoretical input. However, the main focus is training and reflecting on interview situations. It is neither necessary nor possible that every participant will be interviewed during the workshop. Engaging in some active role will, however,be important for everyone to benefit from the workshop. Consequently, participants should be willing to openly talk about themselves as well as to give feedback to other participants in small groups.

Depending on your choice, the workshop will be held in German or English. So please indicate your language preference when registering for the workshop.

Which LANGUAGE to choose: If you are applying to positions in Germany, it is very likely that your job interviews will be, at least partly, in German. In this case, we recommend to challenge yourself during the workshop, even if you are not a native speaker and to choose German as workshop language. Switching partly to English during the workshop is possible if needed.

Pre-work:  For participation in the workshop, it will be necessary to send the task and candidate description of a job announcement you would be interested in, together with your CV and, if available, a respective cover letter.

Registration: Please register here (if you haven’t done it already) and write an email to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de), including a short statement on your motivation to join the workshop (Why this workshop?) and your preference regarding the workshop language (English/German).

For academic scientists, the transition from postdoctoral researcher to group leader is arguably the toughest step that they will ever take. From the camaraderie and intense research focus of doctoral and postdoctoral work, new principal investigators suddenly acquire myriad supervisory, administrative and strategic responsibilities that push many far outside their comfort zones and leave them feeling alone and out of their depth.

Goal: Getting to know all the steps of the application process.

Dates: Thursday, 24 November 2016 (12-17 h) & Friday, 25 November 2016 (9-16 h) + Webinar, 17 November (1 hour)

Detailed Description:

Previous to the workshop there will be a one-hour webinar with focus on CVs to speak about some basic facts and concepts before the workshop, so that it doesn’t take up too much of the workshop’s time.

The workshop itself deals with how to write a professional application. Participants will learn about the requirements regarding form and content of CVs and the respective differences between academia and industry. They will reflect about how to convey their strengths and motivation in response to a job advertisement, but also how to approach speculative applications. Moreover, participants will train their self-presentation skills in the job hunting process, including self-presentation on career fairs, conferences and interviews. The workshop will include various training sessions, partly accompanied by video recording for a follow-up analysis.

Subsequent to the workshop, it is possible to get an individual CV check from the trainer.

Testimonials:
“It was perfectly suited to my need, very helpful with a great experienced trainer.” (Postdoc in Neurosciences)

“The workshop was very informative and dynamic. It helped me to realize my most positive characteristics and feel confident about my future career possibilities.” (Postdoc at GZMB)

“Make the most of this wonderful experience. Learn and improve yourself with the content of the workshop. It’s an eye opener.” (Postdoc in Molecular Biology)
