GAUSS Career Impulse Session (15 Sept 2023, 14:00-15:30) with Dr. Franziska Schmidt (Center Manager at TUM): “Building Bridges between Science and Management”

We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Session, this time with Dr. Franziska Schmidt, Center Manager at the Center for Digital Transformation of the Technical University of Munich at TUM Campus Heilbronn.

Franziska will provide insights into the field of science management and shed light on various job opportunities and employers in this field, sharing her personal experiences and perspectives. Moreover, she will delve into her role as Center Manager at TUM, offering an overview of her responsibilities and contributions. Franziska will also be available for questions and discussions around the topic of reconciling job and family. Following her talk, you will have the opportunity to engage in an interactive and informal discussion as well.

Workshop: “Mastering my Job Interview”, 4 Sept 2023

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshop “Career development strategies: Mastering my Job Interview” by Dr. Alexander Britz.

Are you currently working as Postdoc or finalizing your PhD? Workshop “Career planning and navigation on your way to professorship”, 6-7 July 2023

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshop “Career planning and navigation on your way to professorship” by Dr. Uta Bronner.

In the workshop you will develop an individual strategy to approach the next steps on your scientific path.

Date: Thursday and Friday, 6-7 July 2023
Duration: 1 full day (9:00-17:00h) in presence + 1 hour individual online coaching session (online) on the second day
Location: North campus – exact location will be announced to registered participants in due time
Target group: Late-stage PhDs and Postdocs of different career stages who really want to pursue an academic career
Trainer: Dr Uta Bronner

Workshop Description: 

In a vivid mixture of presentations, group tasks and exercises the workshop guides you as a young researcher to having a closer look at career pathways inside academia. You will develop a biographically based profile that precisely highlights your individual qualifications and skills which are needed in science. Also, the typical requirements and hidden expectations in an academic setting will be revealed.  

How to publish adequately, and what else is relevant for one’s academic career strategy? In which way do mentoring and other activities help to establish progress and development? Which alternative career options could (should) become a Plan B?

On Day 2, you can discuss specific questions about your intended career in an individual coaching session.

GAUSS Career Impulse Session (23 June 2023, 14:00-15:30) with Dr. Daniel Reuss (IQVIA): “Make it your way – From the wet lab to management consulting and beyond

We’re happy to announce our next in-person GAUSS Career Impulse Sessions, this time with Dr. Daniel Reuss, Client Partner at IQVIA.

Daniel will talk about how he successfully made the switch from academia to a leading management consulting firm and further to one of the largest CROs worldwide. He will offer insights on the skillset you need to become a consultant and why consulting companies are looking for new talents with a MINT background. IQVIA is a global contract research organization supporting clients in the pharma, biotech and medtech industry all the way from R&D to commercialization.

Workshop “From a Successful Job Application to the Job Interview”, 16 June 2023

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshop “From a Successful Job Application to the Job Interview” by Barbara Hoffbauer. This workshop is intended for those postdocs and late stage-PhD students who are already informed about various professional perspectives outside academia and have reflected their own suitability for different career paths.

Workshop Description: The first part of this workshop focuses on the application documents. In exercises the participants will reflect their individual achievements so far and learn how to convincingly present them in the CV as center-piece of every application. Analysing real job ads the participants will practise how to write cover letters that create the desire to meet the author. They will get advice on how their determination for a specific career path can be reflected in CV and cover letter and what other application documents to include considering differences between jobs in science and industry.

We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Sessions, this time with Dr. Ana Kutschat, Research Fellow at St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) and the Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) in Vienna.

About the speaker:

Ana completed her PhD on Calcium signaling dependent epigenetic reprograming upon acquired chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer in the lab of Prof. Steven Johnsen at the UMG, currently at the Robert Bosch Center for Tumor Diseases, in 2021. She then moved to the lab of Dr. Davide Seruggia at the St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) and the Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) in Vienna, Austria for her postdoc. There she continues to focus on tumor epigenetics, developing new methods and investigating the risk factors associated with childhood leukemia. She was recently awarded a MSCA Postdoctoral Individual Fellowship for her work.

During this session, Ana will share her path and discuss the challenges and successes she has faced so far, including: being involved in the move of the Johnsen lab from Göttingen, receiving excellent long-distance supervision, witnessing her project unfold in a completely new and exciting direction, wrapping up her PhD during the pandemic, being the second person to join the newly established Seruggia lab, adjusting to a new working environment and being the first Postdoc in the history of CCRI to be awarded the MSCA Postdoctoral Individual Fellowship.

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshops: “Career Planning- What are my further career movements” by Dr. Matthias Merkelbach.

What are my unique abilities and interests critical in determining the right career path for me? Can I combine my ideas about a fulfilled life with a career outside of university and academia? How can I develop a strategy for embarking on a non-academic career path?

This workshop helps to answer this – and other – questions for all those who want to plan their career development strategically.
