About the speaker:

Matthieu is a neuroscientist by academic training and a GGNB alumnus. He moved to Göttingen in 2009 for his PhD in the lab of Nils Brose at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences. His doctoral and post-doctoral research entailed the role of the Neuroligin 4 in neurodevelopmental disorder. Matthieu stepped into industry in 2016 to Icon Docs a contract research organisation where he learned the basic of pharmacovigilance. In 2018, he joined Merck in Darmstadt where he is now Director in Case processing and Quality Management.

Workshop “Conscious leadership inside or outside academia: creating an environment for extraordinary team-work”, 18-19 April 2023

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshop “Conscious leadership inside or outside academia: creating an environment for extraordinary team-work” by Dr. Insa Flachsbarth.

The aim of this two-day workshop is to provide early career researchers with effective tools for actively stepping up into a 360° leadership position – i.e., leading in all directions (upward, downward, and lateral as well as oneself). The learnt skillset can be applied directly in their current position and prepares them for how to lead formally inside or outside of academia. One focus of this workshop will lie on how to lead (diverse) teams towards high innovation and complex problem-solving by creating the necessary conditions for it. For this purpose, the ontological model of leadership, the concept of psychological safety and the model of conscious leadership are introduced

Information Event: “Behind the scenes at Cell Reports” (21 Mar 2023)

GGNB alumnus Christian Schnell, now senior Editor at Cell Reports (Cell Press, London, UK), will give an introduction to the publishing process at Cell Reports and Cell Press and explain what editors are looking for in your manuscripts, and how they make their decisions. He will also discuss how to find the best journal for your study and what (not) to write in the cover letter.

About the speaker:

Christian is an alumnus of the GGNB program ‘Molecular Physiology of the Brain’ and, until 2011, performed his doctoral research in the research group of Prof. Swen Hülsmann. After obtaining his PhD and doing a postdoc in the same lab, Christian moved to Cardiff in Wales as a Postdoc working on iPSC-derived models for neurodegenerative diseases and their potential as treatment options.

After three years in Cardiff, Christian decided to look for new a new challenge, which he found in editorial work, and moved to London. After a few locum positions at different Nature journals, Christian was a senior editor at Nature Communications as member of the Neuroscience and Psychology team and handled manuscripts across all areas within neuroscience. Since April 2022, he is Senior Editor and Strategic Analyst at Cell Reports at Cell Press in London.

About the speaker: Sukanya is a geochemist by academic training. After completing her master’s in geosciences in Kolkata, India in 2011, she moved to Göttingen, Germany in 2012 for her PhD. Her doctoral and post-doctoral research entailed studying oxygen isotopes and other elements in various geological samples in order to understand early Earth processes. Sukanya stepped into industry in 2020 by joining Thermo Fisher Scientific in Bremen where she is an Application Specialist for the techniques of ICP-OES and ICP-MS.  
In her new role Sukanya is active in the laboratory measuring concentrations of different elements in a variety of regularly monitored samples like food, water, soil, industrial raw materials etc. Trace elemental analysis, often covering almost all elements in the periodic table, is one of the fundamental requirements in society to ensure the products being used and manufactured can be designed to have less impurities, be more efficient, and most importantly are safe for use and/or public consumption. Sukanya is engaged in developing new methods and applications that fulfil industry as well as research requirements in this aspect. She assists customers in their daily analytical routines for performing such measurements using the latest available technology. 
Sukanya will share more details about her career path and the challenges, hurdles, as well as successes and accomplishments she has experienced during her transition from academia to industry. She will try to shed some light on the career prospects in industry for young scientists and how the skills acquired in academia can be best transferred to new roles in the industrial world to pursue new career opportunities.

About the speaker:

Barbara is an alumna from the IMPRS Physics of Biological and Complex Systems. She graduated in 2018 with a PhD in chemistry. During her PhD in the group of Prof. Ulf Diederichsen, she investigated the mechanism of SNARE-mediated membrane fusion by developing model peptides as SNARE protein analogues. In 2019, she moved to Glasgow, Scotland and stayed with Prof. Glenn Burley (University of Strathclyde) for a postdoc position, working on the synthesis and optimisation of gene-modulating agents intended for the treatment of mitochondria-inherited diseases. Since 2020, she has been working at CureVac SE (Tübingen, Germany) as a scientist in the process development department focussing on the purification of mRNA.

In this talk, Barbara will provide insight into her career path so far and will share her experiences on the transition from academia to industry.
