Follow-Up Event on the University’s Position Paper on Academic Careers, 3 February 2016

Wednesday, 3 February 2016, the next information event on the University’s position paper “Perspektiven für Karrierewege in der Wissenschaft” will take place, targeting employees, postdocs and PhD students of the Georg-August-University Göttingen. The discussion started in October last year.

It will be in German. However, I’m convinced that questions in English are possible, if you feel more comfortable therewith. Anyway, take your chance to give your view on career issues in academia and beyond.

Date: Wednesday, 3 February 2016, 14:00-16:00 o’clock

Place: ZHG, Hörsaal 101

Workshop “My Project Management Skills”, 2 February 2016

We are happy to announce the next workshop “My Project Management Skills” with Dr. Silke Oehrlein-Karpi.

Date: Tuesday, 2 February 2016, 9-17:30 Uhr

Place: GZMB building, seminar room 0.232
Trainer: Dr. Silke Oehrlein-Karpi
Duration: 1 day

Content:

Organization, coordination and effective leadership have become a must for growing in one´s career, in Academia as well as in other sectors. Not only scientist’s day-to-day work, but also acquiring external funding requires accurate timing, financial structuring and planning of scientific work. When scientists have little awareness of these skills, this can hinder their attitude and confidence in achieving their goals. In this workshop we will raise your self-awareness, show you how to hone these project-management related skills and enable your potential for a successful career.

In this workshop, you will

  • recognize how much experience you have already gained in your life regarding project management.
  • reflect upon your typical approaches, preferences, and strategies that you have applied during your previous projects.
  • figure out your typical role/s in a project (i.e. expert, leader, organizer, coordinator, conflict manager, facilitator, generalist, specialist, team player etc.).
  • realize your particular strengths in project work and project teams.
  • learn how you can integrate your new findings into your day-to-day work and your long-term projects.
  • improve your self-efficacy regarding upcoming projects.
  • communicate your project management experience in application processes.

You will achieve this by

  • One-to-one skill-oriented coaching supported by the trainer
  • Transferring theory into practice by reflection on one’s own behavior
  • Design of an individual project management skill profile
  • Peer-coaching with constructive feedback supported by the trainer

Pre-Work (which is sent about 2 weeks before the workshop and will enhance your benefits resulting from taking part in the workshop a lot):

  • Reading short introduction on project management topic
  • Reflecting on own project experience guided by questions and combined with collecting feedback from others (i.e., colleagues, mentor, supervisor, friends)

Registration:

If you are interested to take part in the workshop, register here and write an email to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de).

Workshop “Social Networking Online”, 18 January 2016

We are happy to announce the half-day workshop “Social Networking Online – How to make use of it for career purposes and what to consider” conducted by Dr. Katrin Wodzicki.

Date: Monday, 18 January 2016, 13:00-17:00 o’clock

Place: GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, seminar room 0.232

Duration: 0.5 day

Content:

The half-day workshop aims at introducing you to the purpose of networking in general. Afterwards, we will have a closer look at LinkedIn as the most widely-used professional online network on which the GGNB recently started the GGNB network to facilitate networking among current and former members of the school. You will get an introduction into LinkedIn’s main functions, especially the professional profile which each LinkedIn member uses to present his-/herself and its relation to CVs. Moreover, you will make yourself familiar with all setting options, thereby actively controlling your privacy and visibility within and beyond LinkedIn. Finally, you will be introduced to further social media which are potentially useful for academic and other professional issues.

After the workshop you will

  • know why networking is important, where you can do it, and with whom and how,
  • be more clear about your motivation to be(come) or not to be(come) a member of LinkedIn (and other networks), your options of professional self-presentation, your networking goals, and how you can make use of LinkedIn for career-related issues, and
  • know other social media and how you might use them for academic or other professional issues.

The workshop aims at postdocs and PhD students with and without prior knowledge on the topic. Besides introducing the participants to basic knowledge on networking and social media tools, there will be room for reflection of current networking practices and social media usage as well as planning of networking and social media activities.

IMPORTANT: Participants will be asked to send their most recent CV and a short note about their career goal before the workshop. If available, bring your own laptop to the workshop. It will facilitate introductory training and small group tasks/discussions.

Registration:

If you are interested to take part in the workshop, register here and write an email to Dr. Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de).

In January, you will have the chance to meet Nikolaus Pfanner, awarded with the Otto Warburg Medal 2015, in a lecture (January 7th) and in an interactive, space-limited session on science and career (January 8th). Moreover, there will take place a workshop on scientific publishing (January 8th). Find below the invitation of the hosts:

Dear Young Scientists,

the Otto Warburg Medal is the highest award of the German Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM). This price has been awarded since 1963 to outstanding scientist, among these several Nobel laureates. Since 2015, the price is kindly sponsored by Elsevier and its flagship title Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) (https://www.regonline.com/OWMlectureseries). The Otto Warburg Medal 2015 was awarded to Nikolaus Pfanner (University of Freiburg) honoring his work on mitochondrial biogenesis and architecture.

To increase awareness of the award, the GBM together with BBA, will host the Otto Warburg Lecture Series in Heidelberg and Göttingen.

Nikolaus Pfanner will present the Otto Warburg lecture on January 7th at 5 pm at the historical Aula. On behalf of the GZMB we would like to invite you to attend this event and support the start of the series with your presence.

Meet the speaker session:

On January 8th students and postdocs will have the chance to freely discuss with Nikolaus Pfanner about issues of science and career. Due to limited space, we kindly ask you to register for this session by December 19th 2015 at https://www.regonline.com/Builder/site/tab2.aspx?EventID=1773969

Workshop:

All students and postdocs are invited to join the workshop “Scientific publishing: publication process & career perspectives” with Dolors Alsina (BBA Executive Publisher) and Christian Schulz (Associate Publisher, Elsevier). Christian has been a student of the Molecular Biology program who recently joined Elsevier.

As suggested by students, the one hour workshop will address the following topics:

  • What to consider preparing a manuscript for publication.
  • The review process from an editor’s perspective.
  • From academia to a career in scientific publishing.

There will be ample opportunity for asking questions and to discuss during and after the workshop.

We hope that many of you will join the lecture and workshop and will help us to launch the Otto Warburg Lecture Series in Göttingen.

Thank you for your support

Ralf Ficner and Peter Rehling
