Before I start in my holidays tomorrow, I’d like to wish you all a wonderful and hopefully stressless Christmas and a Happy New Year. I’m looking forward to meet you again in 2014, with a lot of new energy.

On 4th December 2013, the first speed networking among postdocs took part. This will not be the last event of this kind: Following the good feedback of the attendees, I will soon invite to the next speed networking, likely in March 2014.
Besides, I invite you to suggest and start further networking events. The number of postdocs registered for my services is continuously growing, with 127 registrations by 16th December 2013. So if you want to initiate and invite other postdocs to further postdoc events in Göttingen, I can distribute the information within the (registered) postdoc community. If you want to discuss your ideas, I’m happy to meet with you. I’m moreover open for suggestions which guests could be invited or which topics should be addressed in a Career Impulse Session or a workshop – or even about what to change in the established services and events.

We are happy to announce the next Career Planning Workshop “What to do with a PhD?” for late-stage PhD students and early postdocs.
Date: Monday, 3 February 2014, 9-17 o’clock
Place: GZMB building, seminar room 0.232
Duration: 1 day
Goal: Getting to know about professional perspectives and reflecting about own suitability to different career paths
The workshop deals with what career means and which personal career objectives matter. Participants are introduced to different science-related career paths in the public sector (including universities, but not restricted to) and private enterprises, and which technical and personal skills matter, respectively. Moreover, participants get the opportunity to reflect their own competences and objectives as well as their suitability to these different career paths. Finally, participants develop an individual strategy for their next career steps.
Registration:
If you would like to take part in the workshop, register for the GGNB Career Services here and write an e-mail to the coordinator Katrin Wodzicki (ggnb-career@gwdg.de). The e-mail should include a short motivational statement (Why do you want to take part in the workshop?).
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis! Please note: Confirmation of registration will not be sent between 19 December 2013 and 5 January 2014 (due to holiday break of the coordinator).

Here is a great offer for those of you who wonder how to apply with kids: The Career Service of the University is offering a three-step support starting with a competence assessment, followed by addressing individual questions regarding the application, and finalized with interview training to train handling of difficult or even discriminating questions.
The offer is in German – so even a good training in this sense if you consider applying in Germany. It takes part end of January to beginning of February 2014. It is possible to make use of child care during the sessions. If you are interested and have no StudIP account, write an e-mail to career@uni-gottingen.de until January 15, 2014, at the latest.
