Neurovision Film Contest

Do you want to try out something new? Or did you always have a favor for doing short films in your private life? Here is your chance: The Neurovision Film Contest!

Conditions from the website:

Anyone who is not a media professional can submit a film. We especially want to invite students, researchers, and communicators from the field of neuroscience […] to participate.

The film has to deal with a topic of neuroscience and may not exceed 5 min in length. Spoken language must be English (or provided with English subtitles). You must own the right to all parts of the film, or they must be licensed under a Creative Commons agreement that allows derivative works.

There will be a jury award and an audience award, both associated with winning 500 Euro. Films can be submitted from 15 July to 15 August 2013.

The contest will then take place during the Bernstein Conference (25-27 September 2013) in Tübingen – worth a journey, as I can tell from living there for more than 5 years 😉 Even more important, by taking part in the contest, you could test your talent for a media-related career!

Career Directory 2013 from Science Careers online available!

The Career Directory 2013 includes 8 employer profiles and information on positions they offer. Besides, 4 articles provide general tips and advice on job searching, namely “interview intangibles”, “resume wisdom”, “writing a winning cover letter”, and “job search essentials”. All articles give a few tips on two to three pages. In the fourth article on “job search essentials”, you find four lists of questions: “questions to ask yourself”, “questions you might be asked in an interview”, “questions to ask in an informational interview”, and “questions to ask at an interview”.

You do not know what an “informational interview” is? Informational interviews can help you figuring out information about career options and possible jobs by asking people already working in relevant fields. You might find them by search for alumnae from your current institution, for example, in business online networks such as LinkedIn (for international contacts) and XING (mainly for German contacts). For example, the XING group of the University of Göttingen has nearly 10.000 members by now.

The PhD / Postdoc Community at MPI for biophysical chemistry

As you might know, there is a very active community of PhD students and postdocs at the MPI for biophysical chemistry. You can follow their activities on their Facebook page. It’s especially worth to keep watch upcoming career seminars to which they invite guests who have done a PhD in the natural sciences and now are working in diverse work fields. For examples in the past have a look here. You can learn a lot about what’s possible for you in the future!

Moreover, they provide an information desk on their web page which includes among others information about formalities such as insurances or everyday life in Germany and Göttingen.

Cologne Excellent Women In Science International Symposium (CEWIS), Cologne, 18-19 July 2013

The CEWIS aims at supporting scientific exchange and careers of young researchers. I cite from their invitation:

“The mission of CEWIS is to spotlight extraordinary women in biological sciences. CEWIS also aims to demonstrate how exciting and rewarding a career in biological sciences can be and to encourage young researchers to pursue such a career for themselves.

We are proud to announce that the Symposium will feature talks by outstanding female scientists from all over the world, including Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (Nobel Prize 1995) and Ulla Bonas (Leibniz Prize 2011).”

Besides the scientific program, a Career Mentoring Workshop gives a limited number of participants the chance to reflect about their next career step. For taking part, you have to send an additional letter of motivation.

First Career Impulse Session with Dr. Christina Schütte, Co-Founder and Senior Consultant of ProSciencia Beratungs-GmbH, 6 June 2013, 14:00

Career Impulse Sessions offer a platform for interactive and informal exchange about career-related topics. I’m happy to announce that Dr. Christina Schütte will join our first Career Impulse Session. She is co-founder of the ProSciencia Beratungs-GmbH and senior consultant, specialized in grant writing, scientific writing, presentation and scientific project management. Her career calls attention to one of the many career paths besides academia and industry.

During the session, she will tell us about her career, how it was influenced and which career lessons she draws from experience. You will have the chance to raise questions and discuss with her, the group of participants and me about career decisions.

The session will take place on 6 June 2013, 14 o’clock in the GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, room 0.232.

I will organize some food and drink. If you are interested to take part, please let me know via e-mail (ggnb-career@gwdg.de) for organizational reasons. If you are not registered in our database, please do so in addition.
