KaWirMento – Mentoring for a Career in Industry

The university of Göttingen is offering a new mentoring program for PhD students and postdocs who aim for a career in industry. As I wrote recently, mentoring is an effective instrument if you have already a career goal in mind.

The one-year program will start in January 2014. Besides facilitating the identification of a suitable mentor, the program includes qualification and networking events.

Workshop “Project Management for young scientists”, 26 November 2013

We are happy to invite to the workshop on “Project Management for young scientists: Taking off as a project pilot“.

Date: Tuesday, 26 November 2013, 9:30-17:30

Place: GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11

Duration: 1 day

New, time limited and complex – such are the tasks generally undertaken as projects. Project management competencies are nowadays also in the academic sector a decisive factor for the successful work of scientists.

Proven project management tools pave the way for the professional development and planning of projects, for competent guiding of their implementation and for their successful completion. With the help of these tools even difficult steps in the project journey can be safely navigated.

Goal:

The participants will familiarize themselves with the most important project management methods and instruments. The following topics are at the core of the workshop:

>> Basics of project management: From design to completion of a project

>> It is all about direction: Setting objectives for my projects

>> How to handle the unforeseen: Strategies for dealing with difficulties

>> Projects in the higher education sector: What are the idiosyncrasies of academia?

>> Strengthen your strengths! How can I exploit the strengths of my project?

>> Stakeholder analysis: Where do I find support for my project?

>> Project management: My next steps

Introduction of the Workshop Trainer: Simon Golin

Dr. Simon Golin, Hamburg, heads the consultancy company golin wissenschaftsmanagement. For more than 20 years now he has been involved with not-for-profit management – with a focus on science, education and the foundation sector. Amongst other things, he has been managing director of the “Deutscher Studienpreis” at the Körber foundation, secretary general of the German National Ethics Council and secretary general of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg.

Forum Hochschuldidaktik in Göttingen, 17 October 2013

The half-day event “Forum Hochschuldidaktik 2013” gives insights in contemporary high education teaching – one important tasks of professors at German universities which became more and more professionalized in last years. Besides a keynote, specific teaching projects addressing topics such as how research can play a role in teaching will be introduced and discussed. Talks and discussion will be in German.
