Career Impulse Session: Successful Research and Parenthood, 28 November 2013

To facilitate information and experience exchange among postdocs with family responsibilities and with those who want to be prepared, we invite to a Career Impulse Session on how to effectively combine professional and family life.

Date: 28 November 2013, 14:00-15:30 plus 30 minutes for open networking

Place: GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11, small seminar room 0.233 (basement)

The session will start with an input on more general information such as formal issues, services, and infrastructure (prepared in cooperation with the family service of the University of Göttingen), followed by a more personal perspective of a postdoc telling about her experience as researcher and mother. Afterwards, we open the discussion and exchange of information and experience.

In order to prepare the room and to organize something to eat and to drink, please write an e-mail to the coordinator (ggnb-career@gwdg.de), if you plan to take part in the session. Nevertheless, spontaneously joining is possible.

We are looking forward to meet and discuss with you!

Get To Know Firms Around Hannover: Nacht der Unternehmen in Hannover, 13 November 2013

The “Nacht der Unternehmen” is your chance to get to know firms around Hannover. Beside a fair with firms around Hannover, you can join a bus tour to some of these firms, take part in one of two workshops, get a CV check, and make professional pictures for your CV. As usual with events of this kind, the event language will be German.

Online Courses and Webinars in English and German

Thanks to a hint from Carmen from the postdoc community, I point you today to a portal with “a complete list of massive open online courses (free online courses) offered by the best universities and entities” as it subtitles itself. The topics range from biology and life sciences to economics and finances to personal and professional development – and many more! The course language is mainly English. For example, a Coursera course on “Inspiring Leadership through Emotional Intelligences” starts on 28 October 2013.

Moreover, I discovered a portal with career webinars, partly specifically for women, mainly in German – thanks to the newsletter of the equal opportunities office of the university of Göttingen.

Workshop “Fundraising for young scientists”, 6 December 2013

We are happy to announce the next workshop on “Fundraising for young scientists: How to open doors and avoid pitfalls in research funding“.

Date: Friday, 6 December 2013, 8:30-16:30

Place: GZMB building, Justus-von-Liebig-Weg 11

Duration: 1 day

Good projects need money in order to be put into practice. In light of limited public funding, the securing of sources of financial support – whether classic science funding organizations, foundations or companies – is an important task, especially in the academic and non-profit sectors.

Even though there is no guaranteed path to reach the target, successful fundraising is not a coincidence. A prerequisite is an attractive project concept. In addition, professional skills and abilities are necessary in order to locate suitable funding sources and approach them with the right strategy. If a convincingly formulated application is then submitted, the chances of securing funding are good.

Goals:

The workshop communicates proven fundraising knowledge from the strategic initial

considerations to the funding application and covers the following topics:

>> Basics of fundraising: Communication pathways and fundraising instruments

>> Who are the funders? An overview of the funding landscape

>> Approaching funders: Features of a successful strategy

>> Change of perspective: My project from the funders’ point of view

>> Financial planning: What is expected of me?

>> Applications in practice: Tips & stumbling blocks

>> Fundraising: My next steps

Introduction of Workshop Trainer Andreas Schulte

Andreas Schulte, Giessen, studied philosophy and German philology in Heidelberg as well as journalism at the University of Hohenheim. He has been active in science management for over ten years, since 2010 as a research advisor at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Here he is responsible for research funding and advice for researchers applying for third party funding. This includes both funding for individual research as well as acquisition and implementation of larger joint research projects. He focuses especially on the financial support for junior researchers.
